Home / Phosphorus & your program
Work it out on your own ground

Your soil holds
more phosphorus
than you think.

Put your soil test in and this page works through it in order: what is actually in your ground, how much of it a root can reach this season, what your current program really delivers, and the four ways of changing that. Rates come at the end — after the reasoning, not instead of it.

01
Start here

Four numbers off
your soil test.

Every figure on this page comes from these. Change one and watch what moves — that is the point of the exercise.

Sets how much P the grain carries off.
Bushels per acre. Drives removal.
The single biggest lever. 6.0–7.0 is the window.
Mehlich-3Pick the method on your lab report. Bray P1 reads about the same as Mehlich-3, Bray P2 reads higher, and Olsen (used on high-pH western soils) reads roughly half. Everything below is worked out on a Mehlich-3 basis., parts per million.
Holds a large, slow pool of phosphorus.
Cation exchange capacityHow much the soil can hold on to. Sands sit near 5, heavy clays above 25. Higher means more surface for phosphate to stick to — good for holding nutrients, harder for releasing this one.. Texture, roughly.
DTPA. High P can induce a zinc shortage.

Context

These three do not change the phosphorus story on this page — that is set by your pH, soil test P, organic matter and CEC above. They are here because they change the nitrogen figures and the wet-soil case further down.

Only two jobs: it fills the typical values button above, and it sets how fast nitrogen is lost — which shows up only if you tick sidedress N in step 4. It does nothing to phosphorus.
Only poorly drained changes anything. Waterlogged ground swings between wet and dry, and each swing converts more phosphate into forms a root cannot reach — so it counts toward the locked-reserve case in step 5.
Scales the whole-farm totals in step 6. Nothing else.

Soil test not to hand? — useful for seeing how this works, but get the real numbers before you spend anything.

02
What the test does not say

Your soil test reads
a few percent of what is there.

A soil test measures what a chemical extractant can pull out in a few minutes. It was never designed to measure how much phosphorus your field contains — only to rank how likely the crop is to run short. The rest is real, and it is large.

56 lb P/ac
What your test sees

Phosphate in solution or loosely held — what a root can reach over this season. Measured, not estimated.

370 lb P/ac
Held in organic matter

Locked inside residue, roots and humus. Releasing it needs enzymesBiological scissors. They cut phosphorus off the organic molecule it is attached to, turning it into the orthophosphate form a root can actually absorb., not acid. Estimated from your organic matter.

290 lb P/ac
Bound to soil minerals

Reacted with calcium, iron or aluminum into compounds a root cannot take up. Every pound you have ever applied and not removed is in here. Estimated.

03
Why it gets locked up

pH decides which
thief takes it.

Phosphate is reactive. Put it in soil and it finds something to bond with within days. Which element grabs it is set almost entirely by your pH — and there is a narrow window where neither side wins.

What you apply,
and what arrives.

Put your current rates in. This is not about whether you are applying enough — it is about where it ends up.

Your options

Four ways to change
the arithmetic.

Only four things can be done about phosphorus. We make products for three of them, and the fourth is free. What follows is judged on the numbers you entered — where something does not fit your ground, it says so.

06
Now the rates

What that looks like
on your planter.

The same agronomic model our agronomists run in the field. It returns rates and it will tell you when a product does not belong on your acres.

Where you apply phosphorus is set in step 4 — this page does not ask twice.

This is the field model, not a quotation. Rates come from the product labels and the trial base; soil-test interpretation uses Mehlich-3 and regional loss parameters. Your soil, season and placement will move every number here — confirm the program with your agronomist before you buy anything.
